Bellaire, Ohio Re-Visited

Bellaire, Ohio Re-Visited

In December of 2011 I visited Mount Wood Cemetery in Wheeling, West Virginia.  Later in the same trip I stopped in Bellaire, Ohio. Bellaire is across the Ohio River, just a short distance from Wheeling . It has, (or maybe had) among other things, a couple of very interesting bridges. Subsequent to that trip I wrote several blog posts about my adventures. My first post on Bellaire’s bridges can be found here: Bridges In Bellaire Ohio.

Yesterday afternoon I received an email from a visitor to my website who has discovered my original Bellaire post. He told me that Bellaire was his hometown and that he also lived in Greentree (my hometown) for a short time before moving to Munhall, PA.

From the email:

I liked your photos. They are very good and it was nice to see such good quality pics of my hometown even though it has suffered heavily over the last 20 years.

Thankx Jared for the very nice email and great comments…! It is always great to get feedback from visitors.

After examining my original post I realized that I never updated my gallery after I went back to photograph the abandoned Bellaire Toll Bridge. The day I went back it was raining so I was not able to get many photographs. Here are the original images and the additional photographs of the Toll Bridge.

The Toll Bridge is a steel cantilever truss bridge. The design was by J. E. Greiner Company of Chicago, Illinois and built by the Mount Vernon Bridge Company in 1926. The Toll Bridge was scheduled for demolition sometime in 2013. At this point I do not know if it was demolished or not.

Bellaire seems like a very interesting little town. Hopefully I will be able to get back there for another visit in the near future.
