Everyday, for quite some time, I have been spending my lunch hour walking along the Susquehanna River in Harrisburg’s Riverfront Park. The park is sandwiched between the shoreline and Front Street. It runs parallel to the river from Vaughn Street south to Paxton Street for a distance of about 5 miles. One of the prominent features of the park is the concrete river steps and walkway. They follow the length of the park up to Maclay Street and descend into the river.
My walk takes me along the river from Maclay Street south to Market Street and back for a round trip distance of about 3.2 miles. Along the way there is a constant view of the Susquehanna River. I’ve seen a multitude of wildlife, both dead and alive. There are plants, insects, bums, crackheads, runners, joggers, biker riders, skate boarders, roller bladders, fisherman, polluters, pollution, businessmen and women. In the summer, inner city youth come down to the park.
No two walks are ever the same. On each walk I discover something new, and more often than not, disgusting, along the river. For the past two days it has been the smell of dead and rotting fish. Yesterday I counted 40 dead fish and today I counted 43. I can assure you that these are not the same corpses from yesterday to today either.
So…please turn on your “Smell-O-Vision” (right next to the contrast button on your monitor) and enjoy my photos of the belly up floaters.
